Research Overview

The goal of the research is to create a video-rate atomic force microscope (AFM) which can observe dynamic biological processes in real time. Many important biological processes occur in the nanometer length scales and millisecond time scales, yet cannot be observed because few normal microscopies operate in these domains. Existing AFMs fall short of the requirements because of their slow operation. The introduction of video-rate AFM will enable biologists, bioengineers and chemical engineers to visualize biological processes in real-time in order to extract useful data for their research.
